AUTHOR

Joyce Hocker grew up in Texas, the oldest of three children born to a progressive minister and seminary-educated mother. Because of her father’s stand on integration (in favor), the war (against), and the death penalty (against), the family moved frequently from parish to parish. Joyce received her BA and MFA at Texas Christian University, her PHD in Communication Studies from the University of Texas in Austin in 1974, and later, her PHD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Montana in 1985. She served as a professor of Communication, specializing in conflict resolution, at the University of Colorado and the University of Montana. Since 1985, she has conducted a private practice in Jungian psychotherapy, communication consultation, family mediation, and organizational consultation. Currently, she consults with younger licensed therapists. She led women’s retreats in Central America for 30 years, and now provides retreats for professionals in palliative care. She taught Life Writing in the University of Montana Lifelong Learning Institute. She is currently passionately investigating ancient pre-Christian texts, volunteering at her local congregation as a teacher, and visiting the family cabin in Tincup, Colorado, where she and her brother prepare meals to freeze for his long, solitary winter in the high mountains. She resides in Missoula, Montana, with her husband Gary Hawk, a retired minister and university professor, who is an avid kayaker

Achievements: Joyce left the University of Montana as a tenured Full Professor, with two merit awards for teaching and research. She was the lead author of Interpersonal Conflict, (Mc-Graw-Hill, 11th ed), the most widely used text in its genre in the USA.
